Bringing Montessori Sports to Life in the 3–12 Environment

Patrick Oudejans and co-host Tom Ransom will explore how purposeful movement and sport can be seamlessly integrated into Montessori environments for children ages 3–12.

This session introduces the Montessori Sports framework, rooted in child development, independence, and joyful movement, and demonstrates practical ways to implement meaningful physical activity across Children’s House (3–6) and Elementary (6–12) communities.

Patrick and Tom will share real examples from classrooms and playgrounds worldwide and in Australia, showing how movement can:

  • Strengthen concentration and focus

  • Support social-emotional growth

  • Foster a positive community culture

See Montessori Sports in action in a local Australian school, with concrete strategies, materials, and approaches you can implement immediately.

This webinar is ideal for school leaders, guides, and movement educators seeking practical inspiration and actionable insights for integrating movement and sport into Montessori classrooms.

Tom Ransom

After working in a high school for two years, Tom felt that he loved teaching, but found many aspects of the education system he worked in troubling. When he observed in a Montessori 3-6 environment while trying to decide which school to send his son to, Tom knew that he had found something very special. He decided to pursue this passion, and has worked at Canberra Montessori since 2013, in both 6-9 and 9-12 environments.

Tom began studying Montessori Sports in 2020, and quickly realised the benefits for the whole class, and the whole school. He runs Sport as a fully integrated part of the classroom, where children receive lessons, in small groups, in the normal work cycle, there are materials available on a shelf, and they independently use the outdoor environment for follow up. Sport has so many benefits of a Montessori classroom that Tom says he would never want to work in an environment without it.
